What skills will help me land a role in warehousing?

If you’re interested in joining the dynamic warehousing sector, roll up your sleeves and read on as we outline the essential skills needed to get started.

#1 Forklift operation

In warehousing, qualified forklift drivers are always in demand. Gaining a forklift licence proves you have the necessary training and competence to operate one safely and effectively, and instantly makes you a valuable asset to any warehouse team.

#2 A basic understanding of inventory

Understanding how inventory works is an excellent skill to have in warehousing. It involves tracking goods as they arrive and leave, recording discrepancies and analysing stock usage. You might not be taking an inventory management role, but a good understanding of the basic processes can put you on the front foot for any role.

#3 Basic computer literacy

Many warehouses use sophisticated technology and computer systems for inventory tracking, business analytics and day-to-day operations. Basic IT skills are beneficial, including familiarity with Microsoft Office programs, data entry and the ability to learn new software programs.

#4 Health and safety awareness

Warehouses can include working with hazards, so being safety-conscious is vital. An understanding of workplace health and safety regulations and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) can keep you safe and show employers that you understand the industry’s complexity.

#5 Physical stamina

Warehousing often involves moving and lifting goods, sometimes manually. Hence, possessing physical fitness and stamina can be a strong asset. Experience with manual handling, including lifting, bending and stretching, often with heavy loads, can be particularly beneficial.

#6 Teamwork

Warehouses are typically bustling environments, and smooth operation depends on the efficient work of a team. Excellent teamwork and communication skills are a must to guarantee the successful coordination of tasks and ensure effective cooperation among colleagues.

#7 Problem-solving

From assessing operational flow to dealing with stock discrepancies, you need good problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and resolve issues promptly to minimise disruption in warehouse operations.

#8 Organisational skills

Excellent organisational skills are required when dealing with inventory orders and shipments. The ability to pull correct customer orders, organise goods strategically for efficient operations and help manage workflow are all important in the warehouse sector.

Mastering these skills does not happen overnight, but having a clear understanding of what is necessary puts you on the fast track to success in Australia’s warehousing industry. Remember, skills can be developed and improved over time!
