What is it like to work in the warehousing industry? Here’s a day in the life of a pick packer

Pick packers are the driving force behind the warehousing industry, guaranteeing that the products we need are sorted accordingly, packed efficiently and delivered on time. But what does an average day in the life of these unsung heroes look like? Let’s go behind the scenes and explore a day in the life of a pick packer.

Morning

For pick packers, the morning shift is usually when the race begins! These warehousing wizards assemble and prepare multiple orders for dispatch, often dealing with an influx of overnight orders.

As the day kicks off, the first thing on the agenda is typically receiving the pick list, a detailed roster of items that need retrieving from specific locations within the warehouse.

Equipped with technologies like radio frequency scanners (RFIDs) and handheld barcode scanners, pick packers navigate stacks and racks on the hunt for the products required to fill their orders.

Midday

By the time midday rolls around, pick packers have likely retrieved all the necessary items and shifted their focus to packing. This is a stage that requires an incredible amount of precision and attention to detail. They must ensure items are packed securely, minimising any risk of damage during transportation. The packing process also includes labelling and cataloguing packages correctly for efficient tracking and delivery.

Afternoon and evening

Towards the latter part of the day, once the day’s dispatching has been done, pick packers often perform inventory checks, restocking and warehouse cleaning activities. It’s a chance to catch their breath and reset the stage for the coming day. Also, crucial safety checks may be performed to ensure all equipment is in proper working condition, ready for the night shift or the following day.

So what is it like to work as a pick packer?

While there is a physical element, there is far more to it than that. Organisational skills, planning, the ability to learn and an adaptive mindset are all must-haves.

Pick packers continually learn on the go to adapt to ever-evolving technology in their workspaces, like warehouse management software (WMS), automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and advanced conveyor belts.

It’s a fulfilling job for those who love organisation, challenges and learning, and want to be part of a team that works in sync together.
