How to be an awesome networker

Knowing how to network is a great skill to have. It can create new opportunities and enable you to connect with people in your industry. It might be a daunting prospect for some, but it doesn’t have to be.

Here’s how you can make your networking experience a great one:

Have your pitch ready

When networking, you will often be asked ‘what do you do?’ or ‘tell me about yourself.’ Before you attend a networking event, have an idea of how you will introduce yourself. Try to memorise a few key points. Remember, you don’t want it to sound rehearsed so be natural and inject your personality. However, having an idea of how to answer this question can remove a lot of stress. It will ensure you are communicating the key points you want to get across. For example: ‘I’m Harry, I work in IT development and this year I am hoping to upskill to graphic design.’

Ask questions and listen

One of the biggest misconceptions about networking is that it’s all about you. The truth is, it’s not. Everyone is there to network. Be sure to ask other people questions, find out what they do and listen to their answers. Even if that person isn’t in the same industry as you or is someone you don’t necessarily want to connect with. Be gracious and hear people out. You never know who that person knows or what opportunities they can connect you to.

Look the part

Make sure you take the time to look professional. First impressions do last, so ensure you look professional and tidy. If you’re unsure of the dress code, always opt for smart. Remember that you are trying to make a good impression. Looking good usually helps us feel more confident as well.

Finally, have fun. Networking is a great way to meet people and expand your network, so get out there and start mingling.
