Gabi has a glass half-full attitude

“It might not seem like it, but the glass is actually half full, and if it’s not then… go on and fill it up. We are in hospitality after all!”

Building on her existing skill set, one of National Workforce’s newest recruits has supported the Industrial team during COVID-19. Gabi shares how she is building on her skills and knowledge as she eagerly awaits the return of the events and hospitality industry.

What have you been working on during COVID-19?

I have transferred my skillset to the industrial team at Wetherill Park. I have had to learn a range of new terminology and about the industrial industry. It’s been a change and a challenge, but one that I feel has helped me to grow as a recruitment consultant.

What skills are you using at the moment to get the new work done?

I am still conducting interviews, calling candidates to confirm shifts, and emailing clients about constantly changing requirements. The main change has been transitioning to online interviews only and dealing with the influx of emails and phone calls regarding subjects that are new to me.

Are you using any new skills?

I’ve learnt new terminology! This has been great as I’ve been able to expand my knowledge while still doing what I love – recruitment.

How have you adapted to the change of working outside of hospitality?

Every day is a learning experience. It’s an uncertain time for everyone, but we need to accept things for what they are and use it to our advantage, after all, I probably would never have had the opportunity to learn about warehousing and logistics if it weren’t for the situation we are currently in – so I’m making the most of it.

What would be your advice to job seekers in the hospitality and events industry at the moment?

It might not seem like it, but the glass is actually half full, and if it’s not then… go on and fill it up. We are in hospitality after all! Make the most of this opportunity: read that book collecting dust, learn about that interesting topic you don’t know enough about, or practice self-care. There’s no time like the present.
