Advice to hospitality workers from an industry expert

“Practice carrying and clearing three plates around your house.”

Chrystal has been a much-loved member of the National Workforce team for nearly three years recruiting for a wide range of events such as the Grand Prix, Supercars, various concerts, the Easter Show and many more.

Chrystal’s hands-on hospitality experience combined with her ability to recruit the best people for the job is what makes her one of National Workforce’s top Senior Recruitment Consultants in the hospitality space.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chrystal has had to shift her focus as the hospitality industry has slowed down and has instead, used her expertise and a wide skill set to work with National Workforce’s Safety and Payroll teams, as well as helping create ‘how-to’ manuals for staff.

We checked in to see how Chrystal has adapted during the pandemic and to find out what she thinks about the state of the hospitality industry.

Chrystal, are you finding you are using a different skill set during this time?
Working in National Workforce’s Safety and Payroll teams is quite different to what I have done in the past. However, I’ve been able to transfer my skills to my new tasks, including teamwork, customer service, communication skills, attention to details and computer skills. I’m also really enjoying being able to use my creativity and being a problem-solver, which I believe are important skills to have in every job.

I have also loved the opportunity to work with other teams within National Workforce.

As someone who has extensive experience in the hospitality industry, what are your thoughts on the outlook of the industry, do you think it will pick up again?
100%! We have already seen things slowly starting to come back to life again, which is really promising. It will not happen overnight, and it may not look the same, but the Hospitality and Events Industry will be back and better than ever, I’m sure of it.

What would be your advice to job seekers in the hospitality industry at the moment?
Use this time to upskill. Practice carrying and clearing three plates around your house, spend this time building up your food and beverage knowledge, update your resume and ensure it highlights your skills and knowledge.
